What a Boiler Warranty Actually Covers
A manufacturer's warranty covers parts and labour to repair a fault in the appliance itself. That is a narrower promise than many homeowners assume. It generally does not cover the rest of your heating system, so failures caused by sludge in the radiators, a leaking towel rail, a faulty external control or scale from hard water usually fall outside it.
This distinction matters because the most common reason a warranty claim is refused is not sharp practice by the manufacturer. It is that the fault was caused by the system rather than the boiler.
How Long Should You Expect?

The Conditions That Actually Bite
Read these before you choose on warranty length alone.
- Registration deadline. Most manufacturers require the boiler to be registered within a set window after installation, commonly 30 days. Miss it and you may drop to a shorter default warranty.
- Annual servicing. Nearly every long warranty requires a service every twelve months by a suitably qualified engineer, with the paperwork kept. A missed year can end the cover.
- System protection. Many manufacturers require the system to be cleaned and dosed with inhibitor, and a good number now require a magnetic filter to be fitted. If your quote omits the filter, it may be omitting your warranty too.
- Correct commissioning. The Benchmark checklist in the boiler manual should be completed and signed at installation. It is your evidence that the boiler was set up properly.
- Accredited installers. The longest warranties are often only available when the installer belongs to the manufacturer's scheme.
What a Longer Warranty Is Worth
Put a number on it. If a ten year warranty costs £250 more than a five year one, you are effectively paying £250 to insure years six to ten. A single major repair on a modern boiler, such as a heat exchanger or a main circuit board, can comfortably exceed that, so for a boiler you intend to keep, longer cover is usually good value.
Factor in the ongoing cost though. An annual service typically runs £70 to £120, and it is a condition of the cover. Over ten years that is a real commitment, although annual servicing is sensible for safety and efficiency regardless of the warranty.
Warranty, Guarantee and Insurance Are Not the Same
These three get used interchangeably and mean different things:
- The manufacturer's warranty covers the appliance.
- The installer's guarantee covers their workmanship, and its length varies enormously between companies. Ask about it, because a leak on a joint the installer made is their responsibility, not the manufacturer's.
- Boiler cover or heating insurance is an ongoing paid policy that may cover the wider system and call-outs. It is worth considering only after the warranty expires, since paying for both at once often duplicates protection.
Keeping Your Warranty Valid
A simple routine covers almost every requirement:
- Confirm in writing that your installer will register the boiler, and check you receive confirmation.
- Keep the completed Benchmark checklist with the boiler manual.
- Book the annual service before the anniversary rather than after it.
- Keep every service record, including the engineer's details.
- Keep the paperwork showing the system was flushed and a filter fitted.
Before You Accept a Quote
Ask the installer to state the warranty length on the written quotation, along with whether it requires their accreditation, what the annual service will cost, and whether a filter and inhibitor are included. Two quotes that look £200 apart can be very different once you account for a five year gap in cover.
