What Determines What Your Boiler Costs to Run
Four things decide your heating bill, in roughly this order of impact:
- How much heat your home loses. Insulation, glazing and draughts matter more than the appliance. A boiler can only replace the heat that escapes.
- How efficiently the boiler converts gas into heat. The gap between an old non-condensing boiler at 60 to 80 percent and a modern condensing boiler at 92 to 94 percent is significant.
- How the system is controlled. Heating rooms you are not using, or heating the whole house to a higher temperature than you need, is money spent for nothing.
- Your habits. Hot water use, thermostat setting and how long the heating runs each day.
Getting a Condensing Boiler to Actually Condense
This is the single most overlooked saving in UK homes. A condensing boiler only reaches its headline efficiency when the water returning from the radiators is cool enough for the flue gases to condense. If the boiler's flow temperature is set high, that never happens, and you lose several percentage points of efficiency permanently.
Many boilers are left at a factory flow temperature well above what a well-insulated home needs. Turning the flow temperature down, often to around 60 degrees for a combi's heating circuit, commonly improves efficiency with no loss of comfort, though the house will warm more gradually. This is a setting on the boiler itself, not your room thermostat, and your installer or engineer can set it correctly.
One important caveat: do not reduce the hot water temperature on a stored cylinder below the level needed to control legionella bacteria. The flow temperature adjustment above concerns the heating circuit.

Free and Low-Cost Changes That Work
- Turn the thermostat down by one degree. Widely cited as one of the most reliable savings available, and rarely noticeable in comfort terms.
- Bleed your radiators. Cold patches at the top mean trapped air, and a radiator that is half working still costs full price to run.
- Balance the system. If the radiators nearest the boiler roast while the far ones stay cool, balancing the valves evens out the heat and lets you run at a lower setting overall.
- Set TRVs sensibly. Lower settings in bedrooms and hallways, higher only in the rooms you actually sit in.
- Do not block radiators. A sofa in front of a radiator absorbs heat you have paid for.
- Service the boiler annually. A poorly set up boiler burns more gas, and the service is usually a warranty condition anyway.
Does a New Boiler Pay for Itself?
It depends entirely on what you are replacing. Moving from a genuinely old, non-condensing boiler to a modern condensing one produces a substantial reduction in gas used for the same warmth, and on a large heating bill that difference is meaningful year after year. Replacing a well-maintained ten year old condensing boiler with a new one saves far less, because the efficiency gap is small.
The honest framing is this: replace an old boiler for the efficiency and the reliability together. If your boiler is elderly and unreliable, the savings help justify a replacement you were going to need anyway. If it is modern and working, insulation and controls will do more for your bills than a new appliance.
Where to Spend First
If your budget is limited, the order that delivers most is usually: fix draughts and insulation, then improve controls, then replace the boiler. The exception is a boiler that is old, inefficient and unreliable, which moves to the front of the queue because it will otherwise fail on its own schedule rather than yours.
